Shana Tova from all of us at BH Painting Metro Detroit. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Friday, September 11, 2026, and our team is taking the holiday off. Here is exactly when we are closed and when we are back, a little about the holiday itself, and a short paint checklist for the start of a new year.

Rosh Hashanah holiday hours

  • Friday, September 11: open our regular Friday hours, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
  • Saturday, September 12: closed, as on every Saturday. This year it is also the first day of Rosh Hashanah.
  • Sunday, September 13: closed for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. On a normal week we are open Sundays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please note the change.
  • Monday, September 14: back to our regular hours from 9:00 AM.

Our regular hours are Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and we are closed on Saturdays. They are always listed on our hours page.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year", and it is the Jewish New Year. It falls on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, and this year it welcomes the year 5787. The first day is Saturday, September 12, which is also Shabbat, and the second day is Sunday, September 13.

The holiday begins at sundown. In Metro Detroit, candle lighting is at 7:31 PM on Friday, September 11, and the holiday ends at nightfall on Sunday, September 13, at 8:28 PM. These times are for Oak Park, from Hebcal.

A few of the traditions you may see this weekend:

  • The shofar. Because the first day falls on Shabbat this year, the shofar is sounded on the second day, Sunday.
  • Apples dipped in honey, for a sweet year.
  • A round challah, for the cycle of the year.
  • The greeting. "Shana Tova" means "a good year", and "Shana Tova u'Metukah" means "a good and sweet year".

Yom Kippur follows soon after, beginning at sundown on Sunday, September 20.

A new-year paint checklist

A new year is a natural moment to look around the house, especially if family is coming over. None of these items needs a big project.

Touch up high-traffic spots before guests

Entry walls, hallway corners, stairways, and the paint around light switches and door handles take the most wear. A small touch-up with the original color and sheen can freshen them quickly. Leftover paint that is old, or a sheen that does not quite match, can show as a patch, so try a small out-of-sight area first.

Clean scuffs before reaching for paint

Many scuffs and fingerprints come off with a soft cloth and a gentle cleaner, such as mild soap and warm water. Wipe lightly, rinse with a damp cloth, and let the wall dry before deciding whether it needs paint at all. Scrubbing hard or using a harsh cleaner can leave a shiny spot on a flat or matte finish that stands out more than the scuff did.

Check exterior trim and caulk before winter

Walk around the outside of the house and look at window and door trim, corner boards, and the caulk joints where trim meets siding. Cracked caulk, open gaps, and peeling paint on trim are places where water can get in, and a Michigan winter is hard on anything left open. Make a note of what you find now, while the weather still allows exterior work.

Store leftover paint sealed and labeled by room

Wipe the rim of the can, close the lid tightly, and write the room, the color name, and the sheen on the lid or the side. Keep cans somewhere they will not freeze. Labeled leftovers make the next touch-up much easier, because you will know exactly which can belongs to which wall.

Preparation depends on the surface and its condition. A clear scope may include washing, scraping loose coating, sanding glossy areas, filling minor holes, caulking selected gaps, and protecting adjacent finishes. Existing damage or repairs outside the painting scope should be identified before work begins.

Primer is commonly used on bare or repaired surfaces, difficult stains, major color changes, and areas where adhesion needs help. A previously painted surface in sound condition may only need spot primer. The written scope should identify where primer is planned and why.

Flat and matte finishes reduce reflection but can be less washable. Eggshell and satin add washability and highlight more surface variation. Semi-gloss is often considered for trim, doors, and moisture-prone areas. Product-specific performance matters, so sheen should be selected with the room and substrate in mind.

Coat count depends on the existing color, new color, paint product, application method, and surface porosity. Strong color changes may require primer or additional finish coats. We recommend defining the planned coating system and the expected finished appearance instead of relying on a blanket promise.

Review a physical sample in the actual room or exterior area at different times of day. Light, surrounding finishes, and sheen all affect perception. Record the manufacturer, color name, color number, product, and sheen before materials are ordered.

Temperature, surface moisture, rain, wind, and direct sun can change application and drying conditions. Exterior dates may move when conditions fall outside the selected product's requirements. A responsible schedule protects the coating system instead of promising work in unsuitable weather.

The closeout plan should cover removal of masking and project debris, orderly storage or removal of labeled touch-up paint, and a walkthrough against the written scope.
